Term Definition
Intervention group

The group of patients in a clinical trial that receive the test treatment or approach to care

Intraperitoneal chemotherapy

A way of delivering chemotherapy drugs directly into the abdominal cavity (the space between the abdominal organs and the abdominal muscle)

Intravenous chemotherapy

A way of giving chemotherapy into the bloodstream through a vein

Intravenous infusion

A way of delivering fluids, including drugs, into the bloodstream through a cannula or needle

Invasive breast cancer

Breast cancer that has spread beyond the ducts or lobules of the breast into the breast tissue and/or other parts of the body

Invasive cancer

Cancer that has spread from the original site into surrounding healthy tissue

Invasive ductal carcinoma

Invasive breast cancer that starts in the ducts of the breast

Invasive lobular carcinoma

Invasive breast cancer that starts in the lobules of the breast

Isotope

A radioactive substance

Kinefelter's syndrome

A rare condition affecting 1 in 500 to 1 in 1000 men in which men have two X (female) chromosomes and one Y (male) chromosome (XXY) instead of a single X and single Y chromosome (XY)

Laparotomy

A surgical incision into the abdominal cavity

Latissimus dorsi flap

A type of breast reconstruction using back muscle transfer; involves moving a flap of muscle, skin and fat from your back to your chest to form a new chest 'mound'

Libido

Sex drive and desire

Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS)

Non-invasive breast cancer that is confined to the lobules of the breast

Local recurrence

Breast cancer that comes back in or near the site of the original breast cancer after treatment
