National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre

Directory of Hospital Breast Cancer Services

About the directory

National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC)*established the first online national directory of hospital based services for women with breast cancer in October 2002. To date, it is the only web based directory which details the full range of breast cancer services and expertise available at hospitals throughout Australia. The Directory aims to assist in facilitating appropriate referral by GPs and other clinicians as well as providing information for women about where they can receive relevant treatment.

The Directory has recently been redeveloped with new features to improve its usability and to ensure the accuracy of information. The Directory provides a number of easy to use search options.

Users can search for:

  • The location of a specific service
  • The type of services available within a defined geographical region or
  • The range of services and referral links for a specific hospital

Hospitals can now access their online listing and make changes at any time. To ensure the accuracy of information, all changes and updates have been approved by a CEO/Director of equivalent in each hospital before the information is released to the Directory.*

All private and public hospitals throughout Australia were invited to be included and/or update their details in this Directory from March 2006. All information contained in this Directory has been provided by the participating hospitals. The Directory will be regularly updated; if there is a hospital not listed, please let us know by email: hsd@nbocc.org.au.

Why develop a national directory of hospital based services for women with breast cancer?

There are about 12,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed each year in Australia and it is important that women who require either an investigation of a breast change or treatment for breast cancer, receive the best possible treatment, information and support.

Women's needs vary during the investigation and treatment of breast cancer; women and their referring doctors require access to information about the availability of services relevant to their needs.

Given Australia's vast landscape and the diversity of our population density, not all hospitals across Australia have on-site availability of all relevant resources and expertise for women with breast cancer.

About 30% of women with breast cancer live in rural and regional parts of Australia. But this is not necessarily an impediment to the provision of best care for women in these areas. For example, referral links may be established to ensure a woman and her general practitioner have access to all relevant specialist services, such as radiotherapy or psychiatry, or access to outreach services that are available locally, for example chemotherapy.

update your details

To update your details in the Directory or to obtain a password to edit your details please email directorate@nbocc.org.au clearly marking Hospital Services Directory in the subject heading.

While all efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy of the information included in the Directory, NBOCC cannot be held responsible for any changes that may have occurred since publication. The information in this Directory has been supplied directly by the nominated hospital, it is the hospital's responsibility to notify the NBOCC of any changes to their information found on this Directory. The Hospital Services Directory should not be used as an alternative to a consultation with your doctor or your doctor's referral.

* In February 2008, National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC) changed its name to National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC).
