Breast and ovarian cancer In the News - sign up for NBOCC’s new service

National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC) is launching a new initiative, In the News, to provide comment on new breast and ovarian cancer research and relevant issues raised in the Australian media.

In the News will cover a range of topics, from new tests and devices marketed for the early detection of breast and ovarian cancer, to research of significance. Each edition of In the News will provide a brief summary and explanation of the story and NBOCC’s perspective, including any implications for Australian health professionals or consumers.

NBOCC finalises 2009-2011 Business Plan

NBOCC’s Board of Directors has approved the 2009-2011 Business Plan, which will bring NBOCC to the conclusion of its Strategic Plan for 2007-2011.

The two-year Business Plan outlines a diverse range of projects to improve outcomes in breast and ovarian cancer through the translation and dissemination of research into evidence-based information, clinical best practice, policy and health service delivery.

NBOCC would like to thank all the members of its Advisory Groups for their invaluable input throughout the business planning process. We look forward to announcing further details about specific projects in upcoming editions of NBOCC News.

Minister appoints NBOCC Board of Directors

The Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon MP, has appointed three new Directors to the NBOCC Board.

NBOCC is pleased to welcome Professor Christobel Saunders (Western Australia), Professor Patsy Yates (Queensland) and Professor Donald Chalmers (Tasmania) who bring with them considerable expertise in surgery, nursing, and ethics and law.

NBOCC extends its sincere thanks to Associate Professor Fran Boyle and Mrs Lesley McQuire, who have concluded their terms of office on NBOCC’s Board of Directors. A/Prof Boyle and Mrs McQuire generously provided their expertise and dedicated commitment to improving outcomes for women with breast and ovarian cancer throughout their Board appointments.

The current members of the NBOCC Board of Directors are: Dr Megan Keaney (Chair), Ms Rebecca James (Deputy Chair), Professor Donald Chalmers, Associate Professor Jacinta Elston, Ms Julie Flynn, Professor Donald C Iverson, Professor Ian Olver, Professor Christobel Saunders, Ms Lyn Swinburne AM, Ms Deborah Thomas, Professor Patsy Yates and Dr Helen Zorbas.

Guide for women with early breast cancer – tell us what you think?

In March, NBOCC launched the revised edition of its key consumer resource, Guide for women with early breast cancer.

Based on NBOCC’s Clinical practice guidelines for the management of early breast cancer, the Guide incorporates the latest evidence in a new, user-friendly spiral bound format and has proven extremely popular, with over 17,000 copies disseminated since its release in March.
