2008 Pink Ribbon Breakfasts
wrap it up for another year!

National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre’s (NBOCC) highly successful 2008 Pink Ribbon Breakfasts were held in Sydney on 27 October and in Melbourne on 31 October. In spite of difficult financial times, the Breakfasts were well-attended and the focus on improving outcomes for women with breast cancer as clear as ever.

The theme of the Breakfasts was younger women and breast cancer, and the Sydney Pink Ribbon Breakfast saw the launch of NBOCC’s new Cheeky Check-up public information campaign. The campaign reassures younger women that they do not need to learn a complicated technique to check their breasts for changes and shows just how easy it is to incorporate breast awareness into everyday life. The campaign was launched by Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP before a capacity audience of 800 guests, including Their Excellencies the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, the Hon Maxine McKew MP, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson MP, Nicholas Moore, CEO of Macquarie Group and Julie White, Head, Macquarie Group Foundation. During the Breakfast, the Prime Minister also announced additional funding of $800,000 a year for 2009-2011 for NBOCC.

At the Melbourne Pink Ribbon Breakfast, Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon MP launched a new NBOCC resource to support young women with breast cancer who are experiencing the symptoms and emotional impact of treatment-induced premature menopause and a new training module to support general practitioners in the diagnosis and care of young women with breast cancer.

Attendees at both the Sydney and Melbourne Pink Ribbon Breakfasts were updated with the latest information about breast cancer in younger women and heard from the inspirational Nikki Dwyer, a breast cancer survivor diagnosed at the age of 23.

The Breakfasts would not be possible without the ongoing funding of Principal Supporter, Macquarie Group Foundation. NBOCC also gratefully recognises our wonderful Corporate Table sponsors and the in-kind support from our event sponsors at both the Sydney and Melbourne Breakfasts.

We look forward to seeing you again next year at the 2009 Pink Ribbon Breakfasts!
